“How to Stuff a Wild Duck”: The Ken White Book

Book Design @ ASU

"How to Stuff a Wild Duck” is a 172-page monograph, published in a limited edition of 250 for recipients of the Kenneth L. White Memorial Scholarship. It chronicles the corporate design work of Kenneth L. White (1935 to 1985), a Kansas City designer who studied under Alvin Eisenman and spent his career inside corporate design departments, most of it at IBM, where his in-house work earned international recognition.

I designed the book cover to cover, working from text authored by Jo Ann J. White, and photographed and digitized White's original artwork for reproduction. Like White, I have built my career in corporate and in-house design, and his work is a reminder that in-house design can be original and lasting, not just whatever the brand asks for: treat the brief as a floor, not a ceiling.

Japanese American Oral History Book

Book Design @ ASU

A book interpreting oral-history testimony from the Japanese American experience in Arizona: the recollections of a woman incarcerated as a girl with her family at the Crystal City internment camp during World War II.
I translated her spoken words into a visual reading experience, using typography and pacing to carry the feeling of Crystal City so her story stays with everyone who reads it.

ASU: Thesis Book & Interactive Booth

Visual Communications @ ASU

My undergraduate thesis: a book pairing photographs of the vernacular landscape with written responses, made to prompt reflection. I authored, designed, printed, and bound it myself, then built an interactive, tactile booth to display it and draw viewers in.
